Last September 14, 2021, Canon released two friendly lenses for photography enthusiasts / amateur photographers. The first lens is the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM. This lens is a telephoto lens that is quite long and is usually used for various types of photography such as sports and animals. What’s interesting is its unusual size and weight, which is only 635grams and the filter diameter is 67mm. The price of this lens is US$639 (Around Rp. 9.2 million), much more affordable than the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS lens which costs close to Rp. 40 million.

The small size has to be paid for with the relatively small maximum aperture of f/5.6-8. Although a bit small, the combination of a full frame sensor camera with this lens has the ability to capture light that is not inferior to the 70-300mm f/4.-5.6 lens in the APS-C camera system.
The second lens is the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8. This lens is even more interesting because this 16mm is a full frame lens, including an ultra wide lens. Usually, ultra wide lenses are large and expensive and you have to use a zoom lens such as 16-35mm, 14-24mm or 11-24mm. With this 16mm f/2.8 which costs around US$299 or around 4.5 million, landscape photography enthusiasts who want to bring a lightweight full frame ultra wide lens have been granted. The size is also very mini, namely 165 grams and a 43mm filter.
16mm f/2.8 RF lens with hood. Looks like it will become a best-selling lens for Canon EOS R users
Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 is good for close-up photos of subjects and because of the f/2.8 aperture, the background is blurry
Meanwhile, several compact Canon RF lenses are also available, including the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro, Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM, RF 85mm f/2 Macro and the RF 24-105mm f/4 zoom lens. The -7.1 IS STM can also be categorized as a compact and affordable lens too.
As RF lenses are complete enough for professional photographers, in the future it looks like Canon will shift its focus to making lenses that are compact and affordable which is good news for all of us.
CANON EOS R3
A serious class mirrorless camera for sports needs has finally been officially released globally by Canon with the presence of the EOS R3. This camera with an RF mount uses a 24 MP full frame sensor that already uses stack sensor technology to serve the demands of its users’ fast work. The stabilization system in the EOS R3 sensor is claimed to reach up to 8 stops. The design of this camera resembles the mini EOS 1Dx, with an additional grip on the bottom for shooting vertically. Uniquely, the 3.2-inch screen on the EOS R3 has an articulated design with a very detailed 4 million dot density.
The front view of the EOS R3 shows that the shutter is closed to prevent dust from entering the sensor. The shutter on the EOS R3 has passed the endurance test of up to 500 thousand shots.
Priced at $6000 (approximately 90 million rupiah), the EOS R3 camera is capable of continuously storing up to 30 photos per second in 14 bit RAW format, without black-out in the viewfinder (when using the electronic shutter), thanks to the Digic X chip inside. Besides that, the EOS R3 is supported with a CFexpress slot and a UHS-II SD card so you don’t have to worry about data writing speed matters. If necessary, there is a choice of future 10-bit HEIF image files with HDR PQ which are starting to be found in the latest high-end Canon cameras.
EOS R3 rear view, with a large viewfinder, 3.2-inch folding screen, various buttons, dials, levers to joysticks are available here.
The new thing that is different here is the introduction of auto focus technology with a glance in the viewfinder. A feature called Eye Control AF is able to detect where we are looking and the focus area will follow its direction. This is an interesting thing that makes it easier for professional photographers such as sports or fast-moving animals. For video recording, the EOS R3 is capable of recording 6k 60p video with 10 bit RAW or C-Log3 video options as well as being able to record 4K 120p video for those who require high resolution slow motion. With this feature, the EOS R3 becomes a viable choice for professional-grade sports journalists or documentary videographers.
An additional display at the top, and a button-shaped camera mode, characterize the design of high-end EOS Rs such as the EOS R5 and EOS R3.
Besides releasing the EOS R3, Canon also announced the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 super telephoto lens and the RF 16mm f/2.8 STM ultra-wide fix lens. Both of these lenses are consumer-grade (non L) lenses that users of the EOS R or RP will love, who have been waiting for economical RF lenses.
Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras have many versions, such as the A7 series and APS-C full frame families such as the A6000 series. In the latest generation of all types of Sony Alpha, it has now improved in terms of auto focus, speed to features that make it attractive to many hobby and professional photographers. But as usual, a common obstacle that many people face is understanding
Let’s see how to use the camera optimally, such as setting camera settings, shortcut keys C1, C2, etc., menus to various practical tips that make it easier to use this camera in the field.
For this reason, those of you who own Sony Alpha, both early, middle and latest generations, can take part in this Sony Alpha Complete Peeling activity which is scheduled to be carried out OFFLINE (face to face) by following the applicable health protocols. In this activity I (Erwin Mulyadi) will thoroughly explore and demonstrate using the Sony A7 III and A6000 cameras.
